Is a marriage in Georgia legally valid in my country?
Yes. A civil marriage in Georgia is a full legal marriage, registered by the state. To use the certificate abroad it has to be legalized: with an apostille for the 120+ countries in the Hague Convention, or through embassy legalization for the rest, including the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. We confirm your route in writing before you pay anything.
Apostille or embassy legalization: which do I need?
It depends on where you'll use the certificate. Countries in the Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostille: most of Europe, the UK, the US, India and the Philippines among them. The others, including the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, ask for legalization by their embassy. Not sure? Tell us where you live and we'll answer.
Is a civil marriage the same as a court marriage?
Yes. What India, Pakistan and some other countries call a court marriage is a civil marriage here: registered by the state, with no religious ceremony. You receive an official marriage certificate the same day.
Can we change our surnames?
The Georgian certificate records your names exactly as they appear in your passports. A surname change is made afterwards, through your own country's procedure, using the legalized certificate.
Can couples of different religions or nationalities marry?
Yes. The civil registry doesn't ask about religion, and nationality makes no difference. You each need a valid passport.
Can same-sex couples marry in Georgia?
No. Georgian law defines marriage as between a man and a woman. We'd rather say it here than after you've booked flights.
What if one of us was married before?
You'll need the divorce decree or the former spouse's death certificate, legalized in the country that issued it. Send us a scan and we'll tell you exactly what form it needs to be in, before you book anything.
Do we need to live in Georgia, or stay a minimum time?
No. There's no residency requirement and no waiting period. You need to be in Tbilisi for the ceremony itself, which takes one working day. Most couples stay two nights. Legalization and delivery happen after you leave.
Do we need a visa?
A tourist entry is enough to marry. Citizens of 95+ countries enter Georgia without a visa, and so do holders of a valid Gulf residence permit. Everyone else can apply for an e-visa online before travelling.
Do both of us have to be there in person?
Yes. Georgia doesn't register marriages online or by proxy, so you both need to be at the ceremony with your passports. Everything before and after it can be done from home.
How fast can we get married?
Once your documents are in order, we can book a ceremony as early as three working days away. You marry and receive your certificate on the same day. After that, an apostille takes 1 to 2 working days and embassy legalization 3 to 10, depending on the embassy.
Where does the ceremony take place?
At the Public Service Hall in Tbilisi, the government building where Georgia registers marriages.
Do we need witnesses, or to speak Georgian?
No to both. The registry requires two witnesses and an interpreter, and we provide all three.
How much does it cost to get married in Georgia?
Our packages are $500 and $750. The price covers government fees, certified translations, the interpreter, two witnesses and the legalized certificate. Flights and your hotel aren't included.
What does "married or refunded" mean?
If the registry declines to register your marriage for a reason we should have caught in the document check, you receive a full refund. It doesn't cover false documents, a missed ceremony or a change of mind.
